Glock 43x Magazine 30 Round - Tyrant Designs is an American manufacturer of high quality CNC machined AR-15's and gun upgrades and accessories. They recently sent me a pair of their Glock 43X with 48 +4 magazine extensions. When it comes to magazine extensions, the deciding vote on whether they are quality extensions usually comes down to how effective they are with the gun. In addition to this benchmark, I will also discuss how they change the carry experience compared to standard capacity magazines.

My initial impression of the magazine's expansion can be summed up in one word - accurate. As a former machinist, I can see the quality CNC machining of these parts. Although the magazine wells seem to have a lot of sharp edges, they are notched to a comfortable angle to prevent any kind of probing or scratching when handling or holstering.

The aluminum is well made and resistant to general abrasion and scratching, but will come off if you try hard enough - by no means invulnerable, but good enough that you won't wear down the surface with normal use.

Comparing The Glock 43 Vs. 43x

For looks, I'd give them a solid 9/10 - they look great paired with the original two-tone finish on the Glock 43X and Glock 48 I own. The magazine is flush with the size of the grip and only extends downward, adding to the overall height of the firearm in this configuration. As for the other colors, I wish it looked a little more quirky, but the black and silver tyrant gave me a great looking gun.

This is the most frustrating part of giving a magazine extension to a Glock pistol. With most pistol magazines, all you have to do is press a button on the bottom of the magazine and slide the bottom plate. For Glock magazines, there are two small tabs on the left and right sides of the magazine body that retract into the bedplate, and in addition to the button on the bottom that pushes the spring seat up, the bedplate must be pressed down.

There are tools to do this, but I resorted to using a pair of channel locks to hold the sides. Even with a channel lock, it takes a lot of force to overcome engaging the tiny locking tab to remove the original bottom plate.

With the original bottom plate removed, installing the Tyrant Designs extensions was easy: just slide the follower from the old spring onto the extension, insert the spring and follower, and cap it with the magazine extension.

How Many Rounds Does A Glock Hold?

The Tyrant makes removal easy, with a small, permanent stop at the back of the extension that can be pressed in by pressing down firmly on an empty housing or other solid object - no chute lock required.

The magazine extension works as advertised. I had a little trouble loading these up to round 14. With a little practice, it's not a problem, but the last round definitely takes a lot of pressure to get in there. Even with added pressure, the magazine can be inserted with the slide closed, but the magazine will not fall freely when filled.

I did some testing to see how the magazine would perform with the gun in working order. When fully loaded, the magazine is difficult to seat and does not fall freely. However, it seems you can keep the magazine full for up to 12 rounds and still have it fall out of the gun. If there are more magazines than that, the magazines tend to jam in the magazine. This seems to be a Glock mag issue, combined with the extra spring pressure causing a bulge near the bottom of the OEM Glock mag.

When fully loaded, the sides of the magazine protrude enough to secure the magazine in the gun. This may be a problem for some, but to me it seems like a minor inconvenience as I don't see myself dropping a fully loaded magazine. In normal use, the spring provides enough pressure to properly feed the gun and lock the slide on the last round. Once the magazine is empty, the magazine will drop normally - maybe even a bit faster than the original magazine due to the added weight of the insert.

One thing I noticed is that the extension on the firearm prevents you from getting your palm caught between the magazine hole and the magazine bed when reloading. Overall, I find it easier to handle magazines with extensions attached to them.

The biggest damage to magazine extensions is in the stealth department. When loaded into the Glock 48, the overall height of the gun increases by nearly 2 inches. Gun height is often the hardest part to hide because it contrasts with your naturally oval waist. When hidden under the regular shirts I wear, they create a more prominent print, which is not ideal.

Just recently, TFBTV's James Reeves gave us a scientific ranking of the effectiveness of concealed carry handguns. The efficiency score works as follows:

Calculated from the product of the number of revolutions per square inch and the number of revolutions per ounce. It doesn't take into account the overall length of the gun, but it does its effectiveness. A lighter gun with a thin/short frame and higher capacity will do well here. The higher the score the better.

The Glock 48 typically has an efficiency rating of 0.79 and has a 10-round magazine capacity. As the magazine expands, the efficiency score drops to 0.76, which doesn't drop much. This puts the Glock 48 in line with firearms such as the SIG Sauer P228, Glock 26 Gen 3 and the compact SIG Sauer P320. The main factor that contributed to the drop in score was the increase in altitude.

Subjectively, I think if I were to carry these mag inserts, I would put them in a pocket or mag holster, as this would reduce the negative effect they would have on concealment when inserted into the firearm. Of course, you can beat that efficiency score by adding massive magazine extensions, but ultimately that defeats the purpose of a concealed carry handgun—basically cheating the system.

I think the Tyrant Designs +4 mag extender is a great addition to your Glock 43X or Glock 48 for everyday shooting or as a spare mag extender. They don't add much weight, and they do provide extra grip space for those with extra large hands.

I probably don't carry these as part of my EDC kit, but I do take them to the range and pack them at home. The method I use for carry doesn't lend itself to a larger grip than the Glock 48 already has. It's always a good idea to have extra larger capacity magazines on hand, and I think keeping them at home or as extra magazines in the car or with you is the best way to carry them.

When it comes to magazine extensions, the decision on whether or not they are quality extensions usually comes down to how well they work with the gun. In addition to these metrics, I will also look at how it changes the carry experience compared to standard capacity mags.

My first impressions of the magazine attachment can be summed up in one word - precision. As a former machinist myself, I can see the quality CNC machining put into this piece. Although the magazine extensions appear to have very rough corner edges, they have been chamfered to a comfortable angle that prevents any poking or scratching when handling them or holstering them.

Anodizing is done very well and is resistant to normal wear and scratches, but if you put enough effort into it, it will fade - it cannot be defeated by any means, but it is good enough that it will not wear down the finish with normal use. .

I give them a solid 9/10 for looks - they look great when paired with the two original tones of the Glock 43X and Glock 48, both of which I own. The magazine is flush with the dimensions of the grip and only extends downwards, adding to the height of the entire weapon in this configuration. I was expecting a slightly odd look with other colors, but with the black and silver that Tyrant sent me, the gun looks great.

This is the scariest part of customizing a magazine extension for a Glock pistol. With most pistol magazines, simply press the button on the bottom of the magazine and remove the base plate. In the Glock magazine, there are two small arrow tabs on the right and left sides of the magazine body that are engaged in the base plate, which must be pressed in addition to the button on the underside to force the base of the spring up.

There are tools to do this, but I used a pair of channel keys to cool the sides. Even with channel locking, it takes a significant amount of force to deal with a small amount of engagement from the Locking tab to remove the original base plate.

After removing the original base plate, installing the Tyrant Design extension is a breeze: simply transfer the roller from the old spring to the extension spring, insert the spring and roller, then close them with the magazine extension.

Tyrant has made disassembly easy by stopping a small arrow on the back of the extension that can be compressed by pushing firmly against something empty or other solid objects - no channel key needed.

The magazine extension works as advertised. I had a little trouble loading them up to 14 rounds. It doesn't matter with a little practice, but the last round definitely needs a lot of push to get there. Although the pressure is increased, the magazine can be inserted and the shutter closed, but it will not fall when fully charged.

I did some testing to see when the mags behaved during normal gun operation. If the magazine is fully loaded, they are difficult to seat and do not fall freely. However, it appears that you can have a magazine filled with 12 rounds and still have it fall out of the gun for free. With more rounds, the magazine tends to jam inside the magazine. This seems to be a problem with Glock magazines combined with increased spring pressure causing a bulge near the bottom of the OEM Glock magazine.

When fully loaded, the side of the magazine protrudes enough to store the magazine in the weapon. This may be a problem for some, but I found a minor problem since I could not see the fully loaded magazine falling out. In normal use, the spring provides enough pressure to properly load the weapon and secure the breech on the last round. Once the magazine is empty, the mags are released as usual - maybe even faster than magazines, due to the heavier weight of the attachment.

One thing I noticed is that the attachment on the gun also prevents you from pinching your palm between the magwell and the magazine base plate when loading. Overall, I had better handle with the attachment of the magazine on.

The biggest downside to magazine extensions is in the concealability department. When loaded into the Glock 48, it adds almost 2 inches to the overall height of the gun. The bust is often the hardest part to hide because it goes against the natural oval shape of your waist. When hidden under the regular shirts I wear, they create a more visible print, which is not ideal.

I probably won't take it as part of my EDC kit, but I will take it to the range and keep it charged at home. The way I carry it doesn't lend itself to having a bigger grip than a Glock 48. Having extra mags with a higher capacity is always a good idea and I think the best way to carry it is to have it loaded at home or as an extra case in car or with you.

The Glock is the most widely issued service pistol today, which is pretty impressive for a company that started out making curtain rods. Gaston Glock has no experience making guns, but he has experience making polymers. He convened the top pistol experts in Europe, built the prototype of the Glock 17 in 1982, and the rest is glorious Austrian history.

Glock pistols are polymer framed, semi-automatic, short recoil operated, breech-locking, firing pin fired pistols. Well, most of them are - the rimfire G44 is a recoil operated gun, and the only one that broke the mold. Glock pistols come in many calibers and in various sizes. These weren't the first polymer pistols, but they were the first to be wildly successful.

The G17 was the first model produced and was designed to meet the needs of the Austrian Army. The specific needs of the Austrian Army drove the development of the weapon and define the Glock to this day. The Austrian Army needed a semi-automatic pistol that was safe, lightweight, high capacity, and reliable, and the Glock fulfilled that need.

Glock has a simple way of naming pistols. Each model is assigned a number after the letter G, which predictably stands for Glock. These numbers have nothing to do with the gun itself, and seem arbitrary to most people -- for example, the G45 is not a 45 caliber pistol, it's actually a 9mm pistol.

These numbers are assigned to designs when they are published, not in the order they are published. So while the G20 and 21 started development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.

The G17 came when manual safety on pistols became the norm. Glock's Plastic Fantastics don't have a manual safety, but that doesn't mean they aren't safe. Glock refers to their pistols as Glock Safety Action pistols, referring to the three separate built-in safety devices.

The trigger safety is the famous little trick located in the center of the trigger. When you pull the trigger, your finger is on the trigger safety, so you can't pull the trigger without engaging the trigger safety.

The striker safety device prevents the striker from moving forward when the striker fires. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger lever pushes the striker safety up and away. If you release the trigger before firing, the firing pin safety will automatically fall back into place.

A fall safety device is a device that does exactly what you think it does. Dropping the gun will disable it from firing. When you pull the trigger, the trigger lever lowers the safety ramp and releases the firing pin.

Glock is currently in its fifth generation. As the Glock made exterior and interior changes, a new generation emerged. There is no timetable for when the Glock generations will end or begin, they will be improved as needed.

The release of a new generation doesn't always mean the disappearance of previous generations. Often, the old and new Glock generations are produced at the same time.

There are also guns that exist beyond the generations defined by the Glock. Some weapons are scattered all over the place and may lack the codename used to determine which generation the weapon is. Some weapons are also generational, the most common being gen 2 and 3 weapons. Glock enthusiasts often refer to them as Gen 2.5 guns.

Gen 1 - The first Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: these are useful guns. Generation 1 consisted entirely of one pistol, the Glock 17.

Generation 2 - Glock added different sizes and calibers to the Generation 2 model. A metal plate with a serial number was inserted, the guide rod system became a one-piece design, dice were added to the front and rear of the grip, and the magazine floor was replaced.

Gen 3 - The third generation is where rails become a standard option on larger than subcompact guns. The handle has added finger grooves and scallops cut into the left and right sides of the bezel that act as thumb rests.

Internal changes include a cross pin above the trigger pin to reduce the load on the locking block. Suction now also rises when the chamber is full and acts as a chamber load indicator.

Generation 4 - In the 4th generation, the Glock shrinks the pistol grip slightly and adds a modular strap system to change the size of the grip. The grip is also more radical, and magazine publishing is reversible for the left.

The Gen 4 also features a dual spring recoil bar assembly that reduces recoil. The 4th generation also introduced the MOS gun, which allows for easy mounting of optics.

Generation 5 - The latest generation of Glock pistols is the Generation 5. These pistols have had finger grooves removed, the magazine bay has been enlarged for faster reloading, the trigger guard has been cut in high relief for higher grip, and the slide is now ambidextrous.

Additionally, Glock added a new barrel to the pistol, and the cross pin above the trigger guard was also removed.
